The 105 Best MF DOOM Songs

For DOOMSDAY 2025, the ultimate MF DOOM list.

On the fifth anniversary of MF DOOM's passing, RMIAJ is pleased to present a very special list: the top 105 DOOM tracks.

DOOM has a catalog that stands up to any artist in rap history. His discography has 4 no-doubt classics: Operation: Doomsday (1999), Vaudeville Villain (2003), Madvillainy (2004) and MM.. Food (2004). Black Bastards (1994/2000) - the lost-then-found KMD album recorded around Subroc's passing in 1993 and ultimately shelved until 2000 - is right up there as well.

Following his re-emergence as MF DOOM in 1997, DOOM was both prolific and particular, resulting in some insane bursts of creative output, paired with sporadic, sometimes eyebrow-raising features. The list below spans his debut on 3rd Bass' Cactus Album in 1989 through his passing in 2020, with a sprinkling of posthumous verses released as recently as 2022. The only full-length DOOM rap release (no instrumentals here, sorry Special Herb heads) not represented is 2018's Czarface Meets Metalface!...which is actually a decent album, but the actual DOOM rapping does not live up to any of the truly great tracks that landed on this enormous list. If you're a completist (like me) and want to check out that project, I'd start with "Nautical Depth", "Bomb Thrown" and "Captain Crunch".

You can find my DOOM album ranks on the site's insta page. For those new to DOOM, or lifelong fans who want to make sure they never missed one buried gem, please peruse and enjoy the music.

11. Hoe Cakes (2004) – MF DOOM [Metal Fingers]

hoe cakes mf doom mm food

10. Gazzillion Ear (2009) – MF DOOM [J Dilla]

After J Dilla's passing in 2006, DOOM - who had never released any official Jay Dee collabs to that point - had a field day with various Donuts (see #72, #103, and the loosie "Sniper Elite") and other left-behind Dilla productions. "Gazzillion Ear" is DOOM at his post-2005 best over two buried Dilla instrumentals that may or may not have been earmarked for DOOM all along: "Dig It" and "Phantom of the Synths".

9. All Caps (2004 / demo leak, 2002) – Madvillain [Madlib]

8. Rhinestone Cowboy (2004) – Madvillain [Madlib]

Just over 20 years after the legendary DOOM run of 2004, it seems that Madvillainy has solidified itself as the definitive DOOM project in the public eye. At the very least, "All Caps" has emerged as the de facto populist DOOM anthem. There are 3 DOOM songs with more streams on Spotify - "Rapp Snitch Knishes", "One Beer" and "Doomsday", which I'd chalk up to inclusions on mass-produced playlists - but I'd imagine most casual fans are quicker to quote "all caps when you spell the man's name".

"Rhinestone Cowboy" is proof that your entire album leaking a year+ early isn't always a disaster. For a tacked-on final track, it's not too bad.

7. Gas Drawls (1999 /  Stretch & Bobbito demo, 1994 / 12” version, 1997) – MF DOOM [Metal Fingers]

Originally recorded in 1994, post-Subroc's death but with DOOM still going as Zev Love X; then again in 1997 as a b-side to "Dead Bent" with the initial batch of MF DOOM recordings; then finally again in 1999 for Operation: Doomsday. Each version is excellent.

6. What A N____ Know? (1994) – KMD [KMD (DOOM + Subroc)]

The lone single Elektra released before dropping KMD and shelving Black Bastards. DOOM + Subroc, the illest dynamic duo on the whole block.

5. Lickupon (2003) – Viktor Vaughn [Heat Sensor]

The centerpiece of the best DOOM album.

4. Fazers (2003) – King Geedorah [Metal Fingers & E. Mason]

Just might be the best DOOM production, and one of few samples in his catalog that has remained unearthed. DOOM mentioned in a 2003 interview that it was lifted from a 1970s porno film...but who knows.

3. Fancy Clown (ft. Viktor Vaughn) (2004 / demo leak, 2002) – Madvillain [Madlib]

DOOM as Viktor Vaughn rapping about his girlfriend cheating with the Villain/MF DOOM, whose album he happens to be rapping on.

2. Beef Rapp (2004) – MF DOOM [Metal Fingers]

Fans include the likes of Mos Def and Meatwad.

1. Doomsday (1999) – MF DOOM [Metal Fingers]

"On DOOMSDAY, ever since the womb / 'til I'm back where my brother went, that's what my tomb will say"
